Beyond the Basics: 3 to 5-day Seoul Itinerary

Duration
3-5 days + 2 bonus
Budget
₩850K
Best season
Apr · Oct
Pace
Moderate

Five days is the sweet spot when visiting Seoul, but there’s a lot that you can see in just three days if you want to spend some of the days in other cities.

This is the itinerary that I wish I had when I first came to Korea in 2019. It’s some of my favorite places in Seoul and the days are planned out so that you’re not spending the whole day crossing the city.

Prices are built around solo travelers, but you can essentially double the budget if you’re traveling with a companion. I didn’t put in pricing for hotels/accomodations as it tends to vary from traveler to traveler but you can check out our accomodations guide for more information.

Insider tip

Get the Climate Card (One-time 3000 won fee) and pay 15,000 won for a 5-day pass for subways and buses in Seoul.

Heads up

Check closely for closed days. Many of the museums are closed on Mondays with some being closed on Tuesdays. This will be indicated in the itinerary.

Seodaemun Prison was used extensively during the Japanese colonial period and was later used until its closure in 1987. While many trips focus more on the Joseon Period, both the Seodaemun Prison History Hall and Seoul Museum of History offer a lot of insight into the Japanese colonial period that followed the Joseon Dynasty. The Tongin Traditional Market offers a wide selection of street food and I really enjoyed the novelty of using the coins to purchase different kinds of food. 10,000 won should be enough for one person but if you want to try out more, feel free to get more coins. Unused ones can be refunded in the Dosirak Cafe. If you don’t want to do dinner at Korea House, they also have a lunch option and dessert option.

The Eunpyeong Hanok Village has some scenic rooftop cafes that offer a great view of Bukhansan. Getting from here to Mullae-dong is going to take a little over an hour. Mullae-dong has some great smaller cafes and restaurants in the area and you can stop here for lunch. If you want to have a more budget-friendly lunch, you can splurge a little more at the Ramyun Library. The Hiking Deep Dive

You can book online in advance or rent them in-person based on availability. The Seoul Hiking Tourism Center is about a five minute walk from Bukhansan Ui Station. They also have storage lockers for you to store your items while you're hiking.
Midday
20,000 won
There are a few restaurants near the entrance of Bukhansan and the hiking center. After spending a few hours hiking, it's nice to relax afterwards with some jeon and makgeoli.
Evening

I've left the evening open so you can relax after spending the day hiking. You can use it to visit some of the places you missed or could use the time to hit some of the more common Seoul itinerary items.

The Seoul Hiking Tourism Center has three locations with the Bukhansan location offering a wide selection of hiking gear to choose from. Throughout the year, the Seoul Hiking Tourism Center offers guided hikes and you can get information and maps on hiking Bukhansan and other mountains around Seoul. When booking the hiking gear, make sure that you’ve chosen the right location. They have gear in a wide variety of sizes and it was a lot more convenient to use their gear instead of bringing my own.

Near the subway station, you’ll sometimes find people selling rolls of gimbap, and it can make for a good snack or meal while you’re hiking. On the way down from Bukhansan, you can stop at one of the restaurants and it’s a good way to rest after a day of hiking.

This is the museum that I recommend people to visit if they want to learn more about the Korean War. They also have exhibits on Korea's history before this time and have planes and tanks on display outdoors.

This is the best museum in Korea that spans art and history from around Korea. They have a children's museum and a food court. Nearby is the Hangul Museum and there are several outdoor exhibits as well.

Suwon Day Trip

Morning
2,600 won each way
Mugunghwa train takes about 30 minutes and half the time of the Line 1 subway.
2,000 won
Temporary palaces like Hwaseong Haenggung were used during times of war. Hwaseong Haenggung was used by King Jongjo when visiting his father's royal tomb nearby.
~15-20,000 won
It's hard to recommend just one cafe and some of them change themes and ownership often. Cafe Paletscentoffers a good view of Janganmun Gate.
Midday
20,000 won
Near the temporary palace, you'll find a wide selection of fried chicken restaurants. The traditional market nearby also offer chicken and other food options.
Free
Hwaseong Fortress was originally built during the late 1700s and surrounds the old city center of Suwon. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a relaxing hike up to Paldasan where you can see a great view of the city.
Evening
20,000 won
Compared to the Starfield COEX library, the one in Suwon is much more massive. In addition to shopping, you can find a wide variety of restaurants and cafes inside the mall. The mall is walking distance to Hwaseo Station (1 stop from Suwon Station) and makes it easy to head back to Seoul from here. I recommend getting dinner here and you should be able to find something good for under 20,000 won.

Suwon is one of the easiest day trips from Seoul and offers a lot of history, culture, and food. A lot of the recommendations are around the old city center of Suwon. In addition to the temporary palace, next door is a smaller art museum if you need something to do indoors. If you want to try some street food, the traditional markets near the fortress have a lot of options to choose from and across the street from Suwon Station, you’ll also find street food vendors in the evenings that cater to the university crowd. I would recommend taking the bus from Suwon Station to Hwaseong Haenggung and then when you’re leaving the area, board another bus to get you to Starfield Suwon. From there, you can take the subway one stop to get back to Suwon Station or just take the subway back to Seoul.

Practical info

Hwaseong Haenggung · 09:00–18:00
₩6,000 · Hwaseong Fortress Tourist Trolly: Tickets near Palace entrance.
₩3,000 · 1 session of traditional Korean Archery
₩~5,000 for local bus/subway around Suwon.

7

Boryeong Day Trip

Morning
11,700 won each way
The train takes about 2H:45M to arrive in Boryeong and the train station has a bus stop and taxis that will take you right to the beach. I recommend getting breakfast inside Yongsan Station before you get on the train.
20,000 won
The 100 Bus from the train station takes about 15 minutes. The beach has a shower room and changing area if you plan on getting in the water. Parts of the beach also have lockers for rent and you can find restaurants and cafes on the beachfront. If you want to stay the night, you'll also find a range of hotels and motels available nearby as well.
Midday
18,000 won + 22,000 won
If you're feeling a little more adventurous, the zipline goes right over the ocean water. At the top of the tower, they also have a small cafe where you can get drinks and some ice cream. There's also the sky bike that has space for up to four riders.
6,000 won
While you can reach the area by bus, it's much easier to get a taxi. If you take the bus back to Daecheon Station, you can save about 8,000 won if you take a taxi from here. Gaehwa Art Park has a small, but nice indoor art museum and the arboretum has koi and other fish that you can feed. Most people visit Gaehwa Art Park to check out Cafe Ririss. You'll find plenty of photo zones inside and outside the cafe and the drinks and desserts are good.
Evening
20,000 won
Depending on your schedule, you can either head back to Seoul earlier and get something to eat there, or find something near the train station/bus terminal before heading back home. There are a few restaurants within walking distance that are pretty affordable.

Practical info

If you want to visit Gaehwa Art Park, I would budget ~40-50,000 won for the taxis. If you have a couple of days available, you can see a lot more of Boryeong while also having a relaxing time.
